You have decided to spend your next holiday or weekend in the “Flat Country.” Belgium, a country known for its typical humor and self-mockery, also has much to offer in terms of culture, heritage, and gastronomy, which are rich and varied. To fully enjoy this wealth, the car is the ideal means of transport: a route along abbeys, from Flanders to Wallonia, from city to city; there are many ways to explore the country. And as a bonus: the highways are free. So rent a car from Europcar for a comfortable and peaceful journey. But before you go on vacation, don’t forget that people drive on the right here!

Some conditions to legally drive in the flat country

Important: to drive in Belgium, you must be at least 18 years old and be able to show a valid Belgian or European driving license.

For non-Europeans, there is a list of recognized driving licenses available on the site https://mobilit.belgium.be/

European speed limits

Depending on where you are driving, you must also adjust your speed: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside built-up areas, and 120 km/h on the highway.

Watch your alcohol consumption

Although Belgian beer is known for its taste, the alcohol content can be quite surprising (Delirium, for example, has 8.5%), and remember that the blood alcohol level must not exceed 0.5g/l. The standard serving size is a 25 cl glass. If you still have to drive, keep in mind that with just one beer, you can quickly exceed the maximum blood alcohol level.

Parking rules you should not take lightly!

Finally, you should know that parking regulations in Belgium are quite strict. Therefore, it is advisable to park in one of the many parking garages, or in a clearly marked zone, or better yet: ask the locals for advice!
