The historic fishing village of Walraversijde was abandoned in the early 1600s and was only rediscovered in 1992 in the middle of sand dunes by archaeologist Marnix Pieters. The village has since been partially reconstructed, and a museum has been erected, tracing the history of this unique place. Every summer, a troupe of historical actors inhabits the village to demonstrate medieval baking and smoking, as well as various traditional craft techniques.
