Driving in Florence
To rent a car in Italy with Europcar, a valid EU driving license is required. International driving licenses are accepted but not required.
The speed limit is 130 km/h on highways, 110 km/h on main roads, and 90 km/h on secondary roads. In urban areas, the speed limit ranges from 50 to 70 km/h, as indicated by signage. Speed limits are often reduced in densely populated areas, such as near schools.
In case of rain, speed limits drop to 90 km/h on roads outside inhabited areas and 110 km/h on highways.
In inhabited areas, parking is allowed on the right side of two-way streets. On one-way streets, parking is allowed on both sides of the street, but only if at least 3 meters of free space remains for passage.
Blue signs and road markings indicate paid parking areas. White road markings indicate free parking; pay attention to signs that may indicate a time limit for parking. Parking spaces marked in yellow are reserved for special vehicles, police, disabled, etc. On Sundays and public holidays, parking is often free.
The historic center of Florence is a ZTL () active from Monday to Saturday evening. Only residents or those with a permit can enter this area. This zone is monitored by cameras, and entering without authorization results in a fine.
For the most part, the main roads in Italy are toll highways. Tolls can be paid in cash or by credit/debit card.
Be careful when planning your trip and remember that not all service stations in Italy are open on Sundays, and those that are open on Sundays are often closed on Mondays.
